The aim is to equip graduates for leadership roles as professional economists in government, private sector, or research institutions

1. To develop analytical and research skills in economic theory and quantitative methods, including advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics
2. To equip graduates for professional practice as economists in government, private sector, or research institutions, with the capacity to provide technical expertise to bodies such as the Bank of Zambia and other think tanks.
3. To build applied research capacity in areas including trade, health economics, poverty, agricultural economics, monetary economics, and public sector economics
4. To provide a foundation for doctoral study in economics
